Most popular games in 2023: Absence of new games

The statistical report from Newzoo Data indicates that gamers in 2023 have spent more time engaging with games released six years prior. A new report on the most experienced games of 2023 highlights important insights into the purchasing behavior of video game consumers. Older and more popular titles have been purchased more frequently than newer ones, with new games not being a priority for gamers.

Data regarding consumer behavior in 2023 has been collected. The report showed that developing new games can be profitable, but gamers are more inclined towards spending time on older games and live services. This has made finding an audience for a new game challenging. Despite complaints about live service games, gamers still spend considerable time on them. Game publishers, referencing this data, are accelerating the development of live service games.

Newzoo statistics show that the gaming industry experienced financial growth in 2023, with over $93.5 billion in revenue generated. Only a few publishers and developers managed to achieve the highest possible income. Only 66 games accounted for about 80% of gamers’ time in 2023, and among them, 60% were six years old or older. In other words, about 60% of the experienced games in 2023 were older titles, not necessarily recent releases.

Most Experienced Games of 2023

Most Experienced Games of 2023:

In the past year, gamers spent 27% of their gaming time on experiencing titles such as Fortnite, GTA V, and Minecraft. Newly experienced games were entirely sequels. For instance, gamers dedicated more time to annual games like FIFA and Madden. Only 8% of gaming time was spent on relatively new games such as Diablo IV and Baldur’s Gate 3. Ultimately, Fortnite claimed the title of the most experienced game of 2023 across all platforms. The list for computer games is as follows:

  1. Fortnite

  2. Roblox

  3. Minecraft

  4. Counter-Strike 2

  5. The Sims 4

  6. Call of Duty

  7. League of Legends

  8. Valorant

  9. GTA V

  10. Rocket League

Newzoo concludes in its report that attracting players to a new title under current market conditions is very challenging. The chance of a completely new game emerging and easily competing with major titles is very slim. This statistic may lead to a decline in the development and production of narrative-driven games, with publishers focusing solely on online and live service games as a result.
