Eddie Murphy Reveals Exciting Plans for Shrek 5 and a Donkey Spin-Of

Eddie Murphy has confirmed that the beloved Shrek franchise is set to expand with two new films: Shrek 5 and a solo movie focused on Donkey. The actor, who has voiced Shrek’s loyal sidekick Donkey throughout the series, shared this exciting news in an interview with Collider.

Murphy disclosed that he’s already begun work on the next chapter of the DreamWorks fantasy saga. “Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie,” Murphy revealed. “We started doing Shrek 4 or 5 months ago,” he continued. “I’ve recorded the first act, and we’ll be finishing it up this year. So, Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re going to do a Shrek and a Donkey [movie].”

According to Murphy, Shrek 5 is expected to be released next year, with the Donkey spin-off following soon after. He clarified that the two projects are being developed separately. “No, not at the same time,” he explained. “I started recording Shrek, and I think it’s coming out in 2025. We’re doing a Donkey one next.”

DreamWorks has been trying to bring Shrek 5 to fruition for several years. In 2016, Trolls directors Wal Dohrn and Mike Mitchell hinted that Michael McCullers, known for his work on Austin Powers, had been working on the script. Then, in 2018, reports surfaced about potential soft reboots of the franchise. Most recently, in 2023, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri mentioned that a new Shrek sequel and Donkey spin-off were being considered, with hopes of reuniting the original cast.

Donkey’s Solo Journey

Donkey is not the first character from the Shrek universe to receive his own spin-off. Puss in Boots, the swashbuckling feline voiced by Antonio Banderas, has headlined a series of standalone projects, including two movies and a Netflix series. His latest film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, released in 2022, was well-received by both fans and critics, earning a 9/10 in reviews.

The last Shrek film, Shrek Forever After, premiered in May 2010. With Shrek 5 anticipated in 2025, fans will have waited over 14 years for a new installment. While there is no official release date yet for the Donkey movie, DreamWorks and Universal are expected to share more details soon. In the meantime, fans can revisit the original Shrek movie on Netflix before it leaves the platform next month.
