Miyazaki's defense of Dark Souls 2: It was a great and impressive project

Many fans of the Soulsborne titles believe that Dark Souls 2 lacks the quality compared to its counterparts. This game wasn’t directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, which led many to consider it an odd and infamous member of the Souls family. Ultimately, decisions were made that didn’t quite align with the principles of the Dark Souls series. Miyazaki believes that Dark Souls 2 is an important project and contrary to fan beliefs.

In an interview with IGN, Miyazaki addressed various topics. The interviewer asked him about Dark Souls 2 and specifically its relation to Elden Ring, suggesting that both share a similar design philosophy. Miyazaki is very satisfied with the second installment and believes it significantly influenced many projects following it in FromSoftware’s lineup. He staunchly defended the entirety of this game.

Miyazaki stated, “Personally, I think [Dark Souls 2] was a very important project for us. I believe that without it, many of the relationships and ideas that we and this series moved forward wouldn’t have been brought up.” Many critics of this game also believe that its core heavily impacted other titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and later, Elden Ring. If you thought Miyazaki was also dissatisfied with this game, you would be mistaken, and it’s better to revisit this game.

Miyazaki further stated that the game’s direction by different individuals brought success. Dark Souls 2 was directed by Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura, who took a different approach. The creator of the series believes that having others direct this series led to seeing different ideas that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible. He concluded by saying that it’s likely for the responsibility of directing future Souls-like games to be handed over to others, and there’s the possibility of new Souls games being helmed by a new directing team.

Although Hidetaka Miyazaki wasn’t the director of the second game, he acted as a consultant. Many criticized Miyazaki’s absence in this project, but he will undoubtedly not criticize a game he personally served as a consultant on. However, he’s not entirely pleased with his role as a consultant and prefers control of the game’s production to be handed over to new individuals. He feels somewhat “regretful” about serving as a consultant on Dark Souls 2 and believes he can’t act like a project overseer or enjoy the responsibility. He prefers to either direct or entirely delegate the directing duty to someone else. What’s your opinion? Is Dark Souls 2 on par with the other titles in this series?
