Modders Enable Enhanced Performance for Starfield on Xbox Series S

Modders Enable Enhanced Performance for Starfield on Xbox Series S

While Bethesda recently introduced a 60 frames per second (fps) option for Starfield on the Xbox Series X, the Xbox Series S version was left out. However, dedicated modders have come to the rescue once again, providing a solution for players.

According to a report by Digital Foundry, Starfield can now be played at 60fps on the less-powerful Xbox Series S through the use of mods. By searching for ‘Series S’ in the mod menu, players can apply these enhancements. Digital Foundry’s tests revealed that the game consistently hits a baseline of 60fps, even in GPU-intensive areas like bustling cities, and can reach up to 90fps in less demanding environments.

Trade-offs for Enhanced Frame Rate

Trade-offs for Enhanced Frame Rate

It’s important to note that achieving this improved frame rate on the Xbox Series S comes with a significant trade-off: the game’s resolution drops from 1600×900 to 1280×720. Digital Foundry pointed out that this resolution decrease results in noticeable artifacts due to the limits of FSR 2 upscaling quality. Despite this, the mod offers a viable performance mode, albeit with more obvious visual compromises compared to the Series X version.

This situation raises questions about why Bethesda hasn’t implemented a similar 60fps option. Digital Foundry suggests that Bethesda might be concerned about the game’s visual presentation, stating that “Starfield simply isn’t a particularly attractive game at this point” with the reduced resolution. Bethesda may prefer to maintain a higher visual standard rather than offering a higher frame rate at the cost of visual quality.

Bethesda’s Focus and Player Feedback

Bethesda’s attention may not be primarily on optimizing Starfield for the Xbox Series S at the moment. Recently, Todd Howard, head of Bethesda Game Studios, addressed criticism over the pricing of Starfield’s paid mods. He confirmed that the developer would review its pricing strategy for Creations content after receiving backlash for charging $7 for a single mission in the Trackers Alliance expansion.

On Steam, Starfield’s recent user review rating has dipped to ‘Mostly Negative’ as players expressed dissatisfaction with Bethesda’s pricing policies. The second mission of the Trackers Alliance, available only as a Starfield Creation, costs $7 or 700 credits, further fueling the discontent.

Future Plans for Starfield and Beyond

Looking ahead, Howard has confirmed that a second story expansion for Starfield is in the works, set to follow this year’s Shattered Space. Additionally, he commented on the prolonged development of The Elder Scrolls 6, hinting at more to come from Bethesda.

In the meantime, Starfield players on Xbox Series S can enjoy smoother gameplay thanks to the efforts of the modding community, despite the visual trade-offs. As the community continues to innovate, it remains to be seen how Bethesda will respond to these enhancements and player feedback.
