The families of the victims of the Texas school shooting are suing call of Duty as the culprit

Today marks the second anniversary of the tragic shooting and massacre of children at a school in the city of Owald, Texas, USA. Families of the victims have filed lawsuits against several companies, alleging that social networks and video games are to blame for the tragedy. The New York Times reported that families of the victims have sued Activision, the maker of the game Call of Duty, the gun manufacturer Daniel Defense, and Instagram for allegedly influencing the shooter.

The eighteen-year-old shooter, on May 24, 2022, entered an elementary school in Texas, killing nineteen students and two teachers and injuring seventeen others. Ineffectiveness of the police forces was cited as the main reason for the occurrence of this tragedy, and families of the victims received a two-million-dollar compensation from the Owald municipality. The families of the victims have decided to formally sue three major companies, once again bringing the issue of video game violence and massacre cases to light.

The complaint suggests that the shooter used a gun similar to the one in the game Call of Duty Modern Warfare. The M4 V7 rifle, manufactured by Daniel Defense, is featured in the game with a different name. The plaintiffs believe that the shooter became familiar with this weapon through his experience with Call of Duty, and then decided to purchase a similar rifle hours after his eighteenth birthday to carry out the tragedy.

The plaintiffs argue that the game Call of Duty simulates real firearms from one of the leading US gun manufacturers. Reports indicate that the shooter had been playing Call of Duty since the age of fifteen. The lawyer in this case claims that playing Call of Duty releases dopamine similar to killing someone, thus desensitizing youth to murder. The lawyer compares Instagram, the gun manufacturer, and Activision to a three-headed monster.

Activision spokesperson expressed deep sympathy for the families of the victims and admitted that Call of Duty does not promote violence. They pointed out that millions of people around the world enjoy video games without ever resorting to violence. The Entertainment Software Association also called the lawyer’s and the victims’ families’ claims “baseless,” stating, “We are saddened and angered by such senseless massacres. However, we reject baseless accusations and linking such tragedies to video games.”

Activision is very cautious about the use of real weapons in the game Call of Duty. It remains to be seen where the legal case will lead, but it’s rare for a gaming company to be held responsible for a mass shooting. Instagram, too, is considered one of the culprits for advertising the M4 rifle.
